Third Music Video Edit

This is my third edit for my music video. I am still not 100% satisfied with every single aspect of it, therefore this is where my audience feedback comes in. It is very important for me to obtain critical feedback at this stage as the feedback will help me to further edit my video to reflect my target audience.

I plan to ask people in questionarre form and ask questions such as "What are the camera work strengths?" and "Does the narrative make sense?" By gaining this feedback, I will be able to update my music video so it looks more professional and more so reflect my target audience as my target audience will who ill be asking for feedback.

Abstract elements of my video

This video shows my finished clips for my abstract elements in my video. I did this by using food colouring and water, it was a quick and easy way (although very messy!) too create something visually interesting and something which could be interpreted by the viewer without it being too time consuming and costly. Because of my genre being indie, I knew that a lot of the videos present artistic methods in their video and therefore I wanted to recreate this in my own video.

My Digipak in a realistic context

I photoshopped my album advertisement poster into the NME magazine. NME is the kind of magazine it would be advertised in if it was to be advertised in any magazine. NME like new independent music so I feel that the kind of music would go well with the feel of the magazine. It largely focuses on music that nobody or next to nobody has ever heard of. By doing this, I am also able to see what my advert would like next to adverts of a similar genre.
I also photoshopped my album cover onto the Spotify recommendation page which would come up when I search for 'Vampire Weekend' who are a indie/pop band and have a similar sound to 'The Naked and Famous'. I thought it was important to see how my album cover would look when a member of my target audience plays it on the popular digital media application, iTunes. This application is extremely popular with my teenage target audience,  as a majority of teenagers listen to music via sites such as iTunes and Spotify, and rent music instead of buying it, or actually buying it in CD form so I figured this would be the most popular way they view my album. Overall, I think it looks effective as the artist and album name are clear to the audience and it looks successful as not only a physical product , but a digital product available on iTunes.

I finally photoshopped the CD Cover onto the Last FM website, a website where people can 'like' artists and  recommended artists come up on their profile home screen based on the artists they have 'liked'. The internet and sites such as this help independent artists and bands to become more popular by their target audience, therefore I wanted to see what my CD cover would look like in this context.

Finished Digipak

Finished Advert

This is my final, finished advertisement as part of my digipak. I wanted my advertisement to reflect my target audience as much as possible, as well as looking like a professional media product and been interesting to look at. Due to feedback from Facebook, I decide to make my text more central on the advert as a few people had made this clear that this was something I needed to change, people said things such as "you could have made the text abit higher" and "the top half looks kinda empty". I also change the contrast of the white as I dont think it stands out another, I wanted to make it look a little creamer to appear more visually effective especially with the contrast of the black text. I also made "Including" smaller so that "Punching in a Dream" would visually stand out more and this is important as this is the name of the song which is what the poster is trying to advertise.

Audience feedback - third draft of digipak and advertisement

I uploaded my third draft of my advertisement and Digipak onto the social Networking site Facebook to receive more feedback from my target audience, as using this method I was able to share the images and receive continuous comments on it, enabling me to receive feedback quickly and easily.

From this, people commented positive feedback such as 'I like all of it' and 'Great Stuff!' This was able to show me that my products were compelling to my target audience as most of my friends on Facebook are within the ages of 16-20 and that the video generally appealed to them. Overall, I feel I have received positive feedback from my target audience on certain aspects of my ancillary texts, although they are still certain components I need to change, due to the negative feedback. I wanted people to be honest and give me as much negative feedback as possible so therefore I could adapt my products to the feedback in order for the products to be more appealing to my target audience. Responsively, I gained feedback such as "it does not say the artists name on it" and "you should centre align the 'Heartlines including Punching'" To conclude my feedback for my ancillary texts, I will further develop them in order for them to become more effective based on the negative yet helpful feedback

Third CD cover

Third draft advertisement

I changed some aspects of my music video due to audience feedback which stated:

-"Punching In A Dream" isn't clear enough
-'Including "Punching In A Dream"' needs to be aligned
-'Including "Punching In A Dream"' needs to be more defined

Advertisement - Development

As part of the promotion package for a release of an album, i had to create an advertisement for a digipak. Here, i show how i developed my advertisement to best fit the genre and appeal to the target audience. To do this, I needed it to have a 'young' and 'abstract' vibe, i think this does as the typography looks playful and artistic, aswell as the background image, which is minimalistic yet eye catching.

For the background image, i used some line drawings i had put together for my Graphic Design A Level course. I knew i wanted my advertisement to have abstract qualities which are a convention of many indie/alternative digipaks. aswell as this, the abstract qualities tend to fit the conceptual narrative in the video as many parts of the video are completely abstract and have no reference to the song whatsoever. Therefore, the artwork used on the advertisement reflects the video as it is merely a pattern which exists in thought or as an idea but doesn't really have a physical existence or meaning to it.

I played around with the hue, saturation and colour balance, but i decided on the light pastel colours as similiar colours are used in the video. The video itself provokes light, sensitive, dreamy emotions such as the slowly fading transistions, therefore the colours reflect this.

Advertisement Research

I decided to research into poster advertisements from indie/alternative artists to gain knowledge as to what conventions are used and how I can create mine to fit in with the same genre. Whilst researching, I found that indie/alternative artwork on the posters are especially beautiful and most certainly stand out from the crowd compared to posters from other genres. Most are minimalistic, and use typography and illustration to gain the readers attention. These posters are imaginative and thoughtful while not forgetting the fundamentals such as color and typography. The result is more often than not an eye catching work of art that sparks your interest and curiosity.

Advertisement research has also helped me to understand how poster art plays an particularly significant role in an independent artist's marketing strategy and how minimalistic, eye catching and out of the ordinary designs can be stimulating. Using this simple strategy, the poster could easily become viral, especially when advertisers use the principals of genre and advertising conventions and play with them, with a single click, my poster could be shared online.

Second Digipak draft

Second music video draft

Here is my second music video draft for the song The Naked and Famous - Punching in a dream. It is far from my expectations yet and they are alot of aspects I want to change, such as the colour (alot of the shots vary) and the first shot of the timelapse because it is wobbly and I think it goes too fast and doesn't transistion well into the second shot.

They are still a few black spaces on my video as I have edited various parts for the blank parts but i still need to decide which ones to use.

Type for CD Cover

I have chosen 6 different types for my digipak which i have located from the website 'dafont.com'. I wanted the text to look like it was either hand rendered and rough looking or a sans serif style.  I think that these types would go well on my digipak.  I would preferably like to use two of these; one for the name of the album, and the other for the artists name. My favourite font would be number 7, as it is eye catching and I think it will contrast nicely with a simpler font, like number 5.
